Holy Basil cell culture enables stable eco friendly cosmetic ingredient

ASFREYA has launched a new cosmetic ingredient derived from Tulsi, or Holy Basil, using a cell culture technology that eliminates the need to harvest the plant from nature. The Tokyo-based research and development firm announced the launch of EXO TUE AZ®︎, an ingredient based on exosomes extracted from cultured plant cells, aiming to provide a high-performance, sustainable solution for the beauty industry.

The development addresses growing concerns over the environmental impact of sourcing natural ingredients, which can lead to the over-harvesting of rare plants and supply chain instability. Tulsi is a herb highly valued in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, where it is revered as a “miracle plant.”

ASFREYA’s proprietary technology involves cultivating callus, a mass of undifferentiated plant cells, in a controlled laboratory environment. This method allows for the stable, large-scale production of the ingredient in a limited space, thereby protecting natural plant resources.

The company states that callus culture offers several advantages, including a lower risk of contamination from pesticides and heavy metals, and a consistent supply unaffected by weather, soil conditions, or harvest times. This process also holds the potential to generate novel compounds not typically found in the mature plant.

The resulting ingredient, Tulsi callus-derived exosomes, contains a high concentration of nanoparticles that deliver active molecules to skin and hair cells. According to ASFREYA, the ingredient’s antioxidant properties help neutralise free radicals and reduce the signs of premature ageing. It also works to brighten skin tone and improve pigmentation. The ingredient also promises to strengthens hair follicles and roots while helping to moisturise the scalp.

Having completed its INCI registration, the international standard for cosmetic ingredients, EXO TUE AZ®︎ is now available for formulation in skincare, haircare, and makeup products.
