Ryokan Ohana serves as the former residence of the Tachibana clan, the lords who once ruled the Yanagawa domain. The estate spans approximately 23,000 square metres and is currently managed by the 18th generation of the Tachibana family. The facility introduced universal design rooms and multi-generational suites with a comprehensive renovation of its accommodation wing in January 2025. The renovation allows the historic site to welcome a bigger range of guests, including elderly travellers and international visitors.

The judging panel praised the ryokan for its “living cultural property” approach. Rather than treating the estate as a static museum, the management integrates the family’s history and local craftsmanship into the guest experience. The facility provides multilingual guides and collaborates with regional artisans to offer cultural activities. This strategy ensures that the 400-year-old history remains relevant and accessible to modern global audiences.

Judges noted that the facility demonstrates a clear commitment to inbound tourism and inclusivity. while preserving cultural landscapes for the next 100 years. This philosophy extends to the relationships between staff and guests, fostering a sense of human connection.

The award highlights a successful model for regional revitalisation where traditional assets are preserved through sustainable business practices, and how historic sites can contribute to the local economy while remaining inclusive.
