Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

LIBROM brewery launches crowdfunding for circular craft sake

The Fukuoka-based craft sake brewery LIBROM Inc. has launched an investment-style crowdfunding campaign to support its circular brewing model, which transforms local, non-standard produce into unique alcoholic beverages. The fund, managed by Music Securities Co., Ltd., will be used to purchase raw materials and strengthen the company’s sustainable production system.

The brewery was founded on the principle of a “free brewing style for romantic sake making.” Operating from an unconventional city location, it produces “craft sake,” a new category of beverage. While based on traditional Japanese sake production methods, it incorporates fruits, herbs and spices not permitted under the strict regulations for official “nihonshu” (Japanese sake).

The core of LIBROM’s operation is its circular model and deep connection with the local community. The Head Brewer regularly visits farmers in Fukuoka Prefecture, sometimes participating in harvests, to source ingredients. The brewery actively uses non-standard produce that cannot be sold on the market due to size or shape, upcycling what would otherwise be discarded into new, high-value products.

This new initiative also involves educational outreach, including a project where LIBROM worked with students from Hakata Girls’ High School’s regional co-creation club to harvest local “kisu” citrus for brewing.

The CEO Yagyu explained they were inspired by the depth of the brewing process and wanted to make the culture more accessible, particularly to younger people. The company aims to expand the reach of its innovative brewing culture internationally. The fund represents a major step in expanding their brewing possibilities and hopes to create “a new way of enjoying Japanese sake” together with the investors.
