Iruma City is launching a new initiative for well-being: the Miyadera-Nihongi District eSports Model Project. This programme integrates eSports into a community-based care framework for the elderly and has gained attention as one of Japan’s more structured responses to an ageing society.
Rather than relying solely on traditional preventive measures such as calisthenics or health lectures, this project encourages seniors to engage in eSports, such as the popular Taiko no Tatsujin, to stay mentally and physically active. It reframes the concept of elder care, positioning eSports as a platform for preventing the need for long-term care by enhancing cognitive function and mitigating frailty.

A key feature of the programme is fostering intergenerational connections. Students from Musashi Junior High School and local youth volunteers will join seniors in gameplay, cultivating shared enjoyment. This exchange helps boost emotional well-being and a sense of purpose among the elderly, while simultaneously strengthening the community fabric.
Furthermore, participants will learn not only how to use gaming consoles but also how to connect them to external monitors and projectors. This equips them to continue enjoying eSports independently at home or in community settings. Iruma City also plans to partner with local groups to support the programme beyond its initial run.

To measure its impact, surveys will assess physical, psychological, and motivational changes in participants before and after the programme. If proven effective during its pilot year, Iruma City envisions scaling the model citywide.
Designated an SDGs Future City in 2022, Iruma aspires to be a “Well-being City” where health and happiness are part of daily life. The city is demonstrating its willingness to challenge conventional thinking and explore new approaches to promoting emotional well-being.
