Asahi Kasei Homes and TOLI launch domestic carpet tile recycling scheme

Housing manufacturer Asahi Kasei Homes Corporation and interior materials producer TOLI Corporation have established a joint resource circulation scheme to horizontally recycle domestic carpet tile offcuts across Japan. The companies commenced recycling operations in August 2026, combining Asahi Kasei Homes’ logistics network with TOLI’s processing technology to recover building site waste regardless of the original product brand.

Under the new scheme, Asahi Kasei Homes collects carpet tile scrap generated at new residential construction sites by using Japan’s Wide-Area Certification System. This regulatory framework is granted by the Ministry of the Environment, which allows approved businesses to collect and reprocess waste across municipal boundaries without requiring separate local authority permits. Recovered offcuts are consolidated at Asahi Kasei Homes’ resource circulation centre before being transferred to TOLI’s manufacturing plant.

TOLI then applies proprietary recycling technology to process the collected materials into recycled chips. Unlike conventional methods that separate carpet components, TOLI’s process incorporates both the upper pile fibre layer and the lower backing layer into raw material for its Sustive Back® carpet tile backing. The reprocessed tiles are subsequently installed in indoor common areas of Hebel Maison, the multi-family apartment brand constructed by Asahi Kasei Homes, thus closing a material loop within the residential building sector.

Conventional product stewardship schemes in the flooring industry have historically restricted collection to a manufacturer’s own product lines, and this initiative addresses systemic waste challenges in the construction sector.
