Yokohama introduces R LOOP boxes for resource recovery

Yokohama City Council of Social Welfare has launched the “R-LOOP” resource recovery scheme in partnership with Bookoff Corporation Ltd. and BP Lab Co., Ltd. Dedicated collection boxes have been installed on the eighth floor of the Yokohama City Health and Welfare Complex, offering a channel for residents to pass on unwanted clothing and household items for reuse and recycling.

Under R-LOOP, collected items undergo processing at domestic circular hubs, where staff sort materials for direct secondary market reuse or industrial recycling. The initiative also links resource recovery directly with community financing. For every kilogram of collected items successfully routed to reuse, Bookoff donates 1 yen to “Yoko-Kifu,” the council’s dedicated fundraising system designed to address local welfare challenges unserved by conventional public administration.

The scheme solves a long-standing operational bottleneck for local welfare institutions. The Yokohama Volunteer Centre frequently receives inquiries from citizens seeking to donate second-hand clothing, plush toys, and household goods. However, because local welfare facilities lack the administrative capacity and storage space to process unvetted physical items, the centre previously maintained a policy of declining such physical contributions. R-LOOP provides a structured logistics network to capture these usable items rather than leaving them to enter the municipal waste stream.

The designated boxes accept a broad range of everyday items, including garments regardless of brand, fashion accessories, daily sundries, and toys. Unacceptable items include heavily soiled clothing, undergarments, corporate or school uniforms, electrical appliances with power cords or built-in batteries, cosmetics, liquids, and hazardous items. Following the initial implementation at the Health and Welfare Complex, the Yokohama City Council of Social Welfare intends to expand the placement of R-LOOP collection boxes across additional locations in Yokohama.
