Mizuho Bank, Ishizaka Group, Nishiki, and Nifco have commenced joint research to establish a circular model that repurposes waste plastics from the semiconductor industry for use in the automotive sector. They aim to create a high-value material recycling supply chain in the Kyushu region, which is a major hub for both semiconductor and automotive manufacturing.
Currently, the semiconductor industry in Kyushu generates a significant volume of industrial waste. Much of this plastic waste is processed through thermal recycling, incineration, or landfill. The new model will aim to put these materials into a closed-loop system under the “X to Car” concept, transforming waste into high-quality resources for vehicle production.
The collaboration will leverage on the specific expertise of each partner. Ishizaka Group manages the collection and advanced sorting of semiconductor-derived waste. Nishiki applies compounding technology to ensure the recycled materials meet strict automotive standards. Nifco focuses on the development and moulding of automotive parts using these materials, evaluating their mechanical properties, durability, and quality stability. Mizuho Bank provides the necessary financial and business support to build the sustainable supply chain.
The move is driven by the increasing global demand for recycled plastics, particularly in light of the European Union’s End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) Regulation, whichintroduces mandatory targets for recycled plastic content in new vehicles, requiring 25% recycled plastic use within ten years of implementation.
