Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Seisuke Knife begins monthly rental of Japanese artisan kitchen knives

Specialty retailer Seisuke Knife launched a monthly rental service for high-quality, Japanese-made kitchen knives, offered through the rental platform Kauriru. This allows consumers an accessible way to experience artisan-crafted blades without the commitment of a high initial purchase price.

The subscription service offers a range of domestically produced stainless steel knives, with some carbon steel products also planned for inclusion. Prices start from ¥1,630 per month. The model allows users to test different knives to find one that suits their cooking style. After a fixed rental period, customers have the option to take ownership of the knife.

Seisuke Knife developed the service in response to customer feedback. The company identified a need among consumers who were “interested but never had a chance to try” a high-end blade, or who wanted to “find the right knife” but were unsure where to begin. The service is designed to bring the experience of “real sharpness” to a wider domestic audience.

“Japanese knives are praised by chefs around the world for their ‘supreme sharpness.’ Each one is imbued with the artisan’s handiwork and pride,” said Atsuhiro Nakamura, CEO/Founder of Seisuke Knife. “We want more people in Japan to be able to pick up a genuine knife more casually. Just making cooking a little more enjoyable can enrich daily life surprisingly.”

This initiative applies a Product-as-a-Service model, which prioritises access over immediate ownership, the service makes durable, long-lasting goods more attainable and promotes a culture of extended product use.
