Takenaka and ChopValue Japan partner to create circular building materials

Japanese general contractor Takenaka Corporation has partnered with ChopValue Japan to develop circular building materials from upcycled urban resources. The joint research and development project aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the real estate sector and promote resource circulation within Japan.

The collaboration seeks to move away from the traditional “scrap and build” model of the traditional construction industry. Takenaka has been promoting sustainable construction based on its “Circular Design Build” concept, which incorporates reuse, recycling and upcycling. This initiative is part of the company’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality across the Takenaka Group and its supply chain by 2050.

ChopValue Japan brings its innovative upcycling technology to the partnership. The company has already repurposed over seven tonnes of urban resources at its flagship microfactory in Kawasaki City and plans a nationwide expansion. By collecting and processing materials that would otherwise become waste, ChopValue creates high-value products and contributes to a local circular economy.

The joint R&D will focus on developing re-engineered building materials, such as interior finishing panels, using ChopValue’s proprietary micro-manufacturing technology. The materials will undergo comprehensive performance tests at Takenaka’s R&D facilities, evaluating aspects such as fire resistance, durability and suitability for construction to ensure they meet high standards of quality and safety.

Through this partnership, the two companies aim to establish a regional, low-carbon manufacturing model that transforms locally generated resources into value-added building materials. The partners plan to begin pilot implementation in construction projects from the next fiscal year.
