Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Yokohama promotes Circular Economy with Circular October events

Circular Yokohama, part of Harch Inc., is expanding its month-long campaign to promote sustainable living, called “Circular October,” across Yokohama this year. The event aims to encourage participation in a circular economy, emphasizing community involvement beyond corporate and governmental efforts.

Circular October began in 2023, using the number “10” in October as a symbol of transformation from linear to circular inspiring a shift towards a more sustainable lifestyle. It is designed to raise awareness of the benefits of a circular economy through a series of events and workshops spread throughout the month, with activities across various venues in Yokohama hosting events like workshops, hands-on demonstrations, and themed exhibits.

The events for this year include an English-Japanese Halloween party on October 12 at qlaytion gallery, where attendees can experience cultural exchange games like Trick or Treat and traditional pumpkin face-making. On the same day, participants can also join a zero-waste wreath-making workshop to learn about upcycling and sustainable living.

Another highlight of Circular October 2024 is the IoT-enhanced “Circulation Gacha” event on October 17, where participants can insert recycled bottle caps to power a gumball machine that responds with lights and sounds, tracking community contributions. The unveiling will take place at Netone Valley’s Innovation Center.

The activities also include a bouquet-making workshop on October 20 at UCHISOTO CAFE, where participants will create arrangements using community vases and plants sourced from local gardens. Each bouquet reflects both nature and sustainability, allowing people to connect with their surroundings in an eco-friendly way.

One of the standout events will be a screening of the original documentary, “Repair Café,” on October 29 at “with GREEN PRINTING.” The film highlights a Dutch initiative that fixes broken appliances, clothes, and bicycles while emphasizing the community’s role in overcoming the challenges of mass consumption.

In addition to these community events, Circular Yokohama will also present its activities at the 13th Asian Smart City Conference, to be held October 23-24 at Pacifico Yokohama North. Circular Yokohama will showcase local and international projects centered on decarbonization, providing a platform to share sustainable solutions for building greener urban environments.
