Rare is the chance for us to challenge anxiety from life’s constant barrage of information and social media… by spacing-out! Two companies, Woopsyang Company and VIS, have announced the Space-out Competition 2024, a unique event designed to help participants rediscover the value of mental relaxation and promote a happier, more balanced way of living.
Japan’s Space-out Competition 2024 will begin with an online competition in August, followed by regional qualifiers in Fukuoka on September 14 and Osaka on September 21. The finals will be held on October 13, at Ark Karajan Plaza in Tokyo’s Minato ward. This nationwide event aims to reach as many people as possible, highlighting the importance of taking time to “space out” amid the pressures of modern life.
Originating in South Korea in 2014 by the Woopsyang Company, the competition has rapidly expanded globally, with events now held in Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and other countries. Last year’s inaugural event in Japan garnered significant attention, and was featured on 13 television programs.
The competition is a visual performance held purposefully against the backdrop of a busy city, as an art show demonstrating that doing nothing has value. Participants in the Space-out Competition compete to relax their minds and bodies over 90 minutes. Contestants dress to represent their professions or statuses and are evaluated on their heart rate fluctuations and overall relaxation. Judging criteria include both artistic and technical aspects of relaxation, making it a unique blend of performance and mindfulness.
The competition is free to enter, supported by sponsorship from various companies committed to promoting well-being and wellness. By promoting the concept of spacing out, the organizers aim to create more mental space for individuals, contributing to a broader movement towards mental wellness and happiness.
