“Kodomo Takushoku” program embarks on a new challenge: crowdfunding through Furusato Tax donations. Kodomo Takushoku, a food delivery program for economically struggling households in Bunkyo Ward, hopes to raise the potential for a grassroots social change.
Launched in October 2017, this intrepid initiative has already achieved remarkable success. Today, the program serves approximately 650 households in Bunkyo Ward, a remarkable increase from the initial 150 households. Kodomo Takushoku’s transformative impact stems from its ability to deliver food to those in need every two months, in conjunction with financial assistance from Furusato taxes.
What’s more, the program’s innovative funding model eschews the traditional notion of return gifts. This way, all donations are channeled directly into the project, a testament to the altruistic spirit of the community. This year, the ambitious crowdfunding goal is set at 61.65 million yen, a sum that will allow the bi-monthly deliveries to reach even greater heights.
Behind this initiative’s success is the remarkable collaboration between local governments, non-profit organizations, and the private sector. Companies generously donate non-perishable items such as rice, pasta, seasonings, beverages, and snacks, while operational funds are collected through Furusato tax donations (government crowdfunding). This intricate web of partnerships exemplifies the power of community-driven change.
The Kodomo Takushoku program is more than just a food delivery service; it represents a lifeline for families grappling with economic hardship. In 2022, in collaboration with donating companies, the program expanded its offerings to include invitations to baseball games, free distribution of innerwear, and gifts of picture books and stuffed animals. These experiences serve as a reminder that the intangible connections formed between people are the true fabric of society.
As the world grapples with the ongoing challenges of the novel coronavirus and rising prices, Kodomo Takushoku remains steadfast in its mission. The program has continued to provide additional support since 2020, offering a lifeline to households deeply affected by these hardships.
In this, the 7th year of Kodomo Takushoku, the crowdfunding project aims to ensure that no parent or child is left behind. Together, the community can forge new connections, watch over one another, and provide unwavering support to those in need.
